From the 1960s to the late 1980s, when it left the police vehicle market, Chrysler was the dominant supplier of cars to American law enforcement agencies. While civilian buyers of the Fury I were limited in their engine selection, government buyers could select any available powerplant. The 383 CID V8 with a 3.23 rear axle ratio was a popular choice with state police forces.
